On our Bookshelf this Month

February 2024

In 15 minutes hear the inspiring story of a woman whose initiative to remove plastic bag waste improved her community and the lives of many. In Zero Waste Melrose’s monthly series, What’s on our Bookshelf this Month?, we highlight books on the subjects of zero waste and sustainability.

Isatou Cessay observed the plastic bag waste that littered her town in The Gambia, West Africa. The bags caused harm ranging from the deaths of family goats to creating a breeding ground for malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Her initiative to recycle these bags has evolved into the Women’s Initiative Gambia and provides an income to families, empowers women, and removes the plastic bag trash. Listen to her story and read more on the initiative’s website.
